How to Use This Calculator
- Choose your input method — enter length × width or total square feet.
- Select the desired depth of mulch (3 inches is recommended for most beds).
- Optionally enter a bulk price per cubic yard for cost estimates.
- Click "Calculate Mulch" to see volume in cubic yards and bag counts.
- Tip: 2" depth for top-up, 3" for new beds, 4" for weed suppression.
The Formula
Cubic Yards = (Area in sq ft × Depth in inches) ÷ 324
This combines two conversions: depth in inches to feet (÷12) and cubic feet to cubic yards (÷27). So 12 × 27 = 324.
Bags (2 cu ft) = (Area × Depth ÷ 12) ÷ 2
Standard mulch bags are 2 cubic feet. One cubic yard equals 13.5 bags.
