How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter the patio length and width in feet.
  2. Select your paver size from the common presets.
  3. Choose the joint width between pavers (3/16" is standard).
  4. Set a waste factor — 10% for most layouts, 15% if you have curves or diagonal cuts.
  5. Click "Calculate Paver Materials" for a complete material list including base materials.

The Formula

Pavers = Patio Area ÷ ((Paver Width + Joint) × (Paver Length + Joint) ÷ 144)

Each paver's effective area includes one joint width on each dimension. The result is in square inches, divided by 144 to convert to square feet.

Leveling Sand (tons) = (Area × 1″ depth ÷ 12) × 100 lbs/cu ft ÷ 2000
Gravel Sub-Base (tons) = (Area × 4″ depth ÷ 12) × 105 lbs/cu ft ÷ 2000

Edge restraint equals the perimeter of the patio in linear feet.
