How to Use This Calculator
- Select your project type from the dropdown.
- Enter the project area in square feet (room size, roof area, or yard area).
- Choose the debris type — heavy debris needs a smaller dumpster due to weight limits.
- Click "Calculate Dumpster Size" for recommendations.
- When in doubt, size up — it's cheaper than a second haul.
The Formula
Estimated Volume = Project Area × Debris Factor (cu yd per sq ft)
Debris factors vary by project type:
- Home cleanout: ~0.01 cu yd/sq ft (1 yd per 100 sq ft of home)
- Roofing: ~0.01–0.015 cu yd/sq ft (1 yard per ~33 sq of roofing)
- Remodel: ~0.015–0.025 cu yd/sq ft depending on scope
- Demolition: ~0.025–0.05 cu yd/sq ft
Standard sizes: 10, 15, 20, 30, 40 cubic yards
Heavy materials (concrete, dirt) usually max out at 10–15 yard dumpsters due to weight limits (typically 2–4 tons for 10-yard, 4–6 tons for 20-yard).
