How to Use This Calculator
- Enter your shed length and width (footprint dimensions).
- Set the wall height — 8 ft is standard for sheds.
- Choose a roof pitch — 4/12 is the most common for sheds.
- Select stud spacing (16" OC is standard, 24" OC for lighter builds).
- Click "Calculate Materials" for your complete material list.
The Formula
Wall Studs = (Perimeter ÷ Spacing) + 1 per wall + corner studs
Plates = Perimeter × 3 (double top plate + bottom plate)
Roof Area = Length × (Width ÷ 2 × Pitch Factor) × 2 sides
Shingle Bundles = Roof Area ÷ 33.3 sq ft/bundle
The roof pitch factor converts the horizontal run into actual rafter length. Floor joists are spaced at 16" OC. All quantities include a 10% waste factor.
