How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter the length and width of the paving area in feet.
  2. Select the asphalt thickness (2″ is standard for residential driveways).
  3. Choose the asphalt type (hot mix is most common).
  4. Set a waste/compaction factor (5% is typical).
  5. Optionally enter a price per ton for cost estimates.
  6. Click "Calculate Asphalt" for tonnage and cost.

The Formula

Volume (cu ft) = Length × Width × (Thickness ÷ 12)
Weight (lbs) = Volume × Density (lb/cu ft)
Tons = Weight ÷ 2000
With Waste = Tons × (1 + Waste%)

Hot mix asphalt (HMA) typically weighs 145 lbs per cubic foot compacted. One ton of HMA covers approximately 80 sq ft at 2″ thick. Actual density varies by mix design — confirm with your asphalt supplier.
