How to Use This Calculator
- Select your fence type — wood or chain link.
- Enter the total length of your fence run in feet.
- Set the fence height and post spacing (6 or 8 feet is standard).
- For wood fences, enter the picket width (standard is 5.5 inches).
- Click "Calculate Fence Materials" to get your complete material list.
The Formula
For wood fences:
Posts = (Total Length ÷ Post Spacing) + 1 + Gates
Rails = Sections × Rails per Section (2 for ≤6ft, 3 for taller)
Pickets = (Total Length × 12) ÷ (Picket Width + Gap)
For chain link:
Fabric = Total Length in linear feet
Top Rail Sections = Length ÷ 10.5 ft
Concrete is estimated at 1 bag (50 lb) per post for fences up to 6 ft, and 2 bags per post for taller fences.
